About Baby Café USA
Baby Café USA is a national nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that licenses, supports, and coordinates a growing network of Baby Café sites across the United States. Communities nationwide implement the Baby Café model to expand access to free, evidence-based breastfeeding support, reduce health disparities, and help families meet their infant feeding goals.
All Baby Café sites in the U.S. are licensed by Baby Café USA and operate under a standardized, quality-assured model, including authorized use of the Baby Café name and trademarked logo. Through training, technical assistance, and data-driven evaluation, Baby Café USA works to strengthen community-based lactation support and improve maternal and infant health outcomes nationwide.

Our Mission and Vision

BCUSA History
Baby Café USA (BCUSA) was established as a non-profit organization in February 2012 by Lucia Jenkins RN, IBCLC, RLC. The idea for the first U.S. Baby Café was conceived in 2004 with her vision of free, drop-in weekly meeting sites where breastfeeding families could access timely, professional quality intervention and guidance, while also building supportive relationships with other community families. Ms. Jenkins founded the first Baby Café in 2006 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, which quickly expanded with two additional WIC-based Cafés. BCUSA was formed six years later and continued to expand across the country with licensed Baby Cafés currently operating in 26 states, including Alaska.
The Baby Café Service Model
The Baby Café Service Model is a standardized, evidence-based approach to providing free, community-based breastfeeding and chestfeeding support to families from pregnancy through weaning.
All Baby Cafés operate under a national framework licensed and supported by Baby Café USA. This shared model ensures consistency, accountability, and high-quality care across communities, while allowing each site to respond to local needs.
Standardized Care
All Baby Cafés are required to be licensed by Baby Café USA through a formal application process that includes staff training and adherence to the Baby Café service standards. Cafés must maintain a current license, renewed annually, in order to operate.
The Baby Café name and trademarked logo represent a trusted standard of quality, evidence-based breastfeeding support that is free to all families. Baby Cafés do not sell products or market services to attendees, ensuring that care remains unbiased and family-centered.
Quality Professional Staff
Baby Café staff include a range of approved breastfeeding support providers, such as International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs), Certified Lactation Specialists (CLSs), Breastfeeding Counselors (BCs), and Certified Lactation Educators (CLEs).
All Baby Cafés have access to an IBCLC, use a digital infant scale, and are able to refer families to specialty care when needed. Support is available for all aspects of breastfeeding and chestfeeding and how it fits into daily life, from initiation through weaning, including pumping, returning to work, combination feeding, and common challenges.
Inclusive and Accessible Support
Baby Cafés offer free, full-spectrum breastfeeding and chestfeeding support for all families. Cafés welcome parents who exclusively breastfeed, exclusively pump, or use a combination of feeding methods, as well as working parents, stay-at-home parents, and families of all cultures, identities, and family structures.
Baby Café sponsors make intentional efforts to staff Cafés in ways that reflect the communities they serve. Translation services are available when needed, and many sites also offer Virtual Baby Cafés to increase access and reduce barriers to participation.
Parent Community Connection
In addition to professional lactation care, Baby Cafés emphasize peer connection and relationship-based support. Cafés encourage social connection among participants and may offer opportunities for continued engagement beyond Café sessions, such as parent-led groups, educational events, or community activities that strengthen support networks.
Data Collection and Program Effectiveness
All Baby Cafés participate in required data collection for internal review, quality improvement, and program evaluation. Ongoing data analysis helps Baby Café USA and local sponsors understand who is being served, identify gaps in access, and strengthen services over time.
Peer-reviewed research published in the journal Breastfeeding Medicine has demonstrated that participation in Baby Cafés is associated with improved breastfeeding duration, reinforcing the effectiveness of the Baby Café model as a community-based intervention.
